Back in the Saddle
FINALLY.....
I was able to be in a place I adore. The sidelines of a lacrosse field, Canon Mark 7Dii firmly mounted on my monopod, outfitted with a 100-400 zoom, photographing the amazing Glastonbury CT High School Boys Lacrosse team. It was so happy.
Then I moved. Shifted just a bit and felt my backbrace. I reminded myself, "Carolyn, don't arch your back. Don't turn too quick. DON'T aggravate your BACK!!!"
It was frustrating. The back brace, don't move. The arching, don't DO THAT! Not being able to immerse myself in the game. I finally took off the brace, positioned myself so that I couldn't arch my back and started again.
Follow the game. Follow the ball. Anticipate the shot. Finger on the shutter. Wait, move slowly. Follow the game. Follow the ball. Anticipate the shot. Finger on the shutter. Ouch, MOVE SLOWLY.
Follow the game. Follow the ball. DON'T ARCH. Anticipate the shot. Finger on the shutter. Click, Click, Click.

I finally was in a rhythm. A new rhythm that had to know include Don'ts and move slowly's. But a rhythm non the less. Peace, happiness, joy was felt again. I'm back.
See, it's been a long time since I was on the sidelines of a sports field. Almost 4 months to the day. I've been through sobbing pain, days in the hospital, weeks flat on my back and walking with a walker. I have this thing called Spondylolisthesis. Which basically means, that my lower vertebrae are not in alignment. Lower lumber vertebrae 4 (L4) is slightly askew over it's friend vertebrae 5 (L5) with a bulging disc. If that wasn't so bad, L5 was about 4 mm askew over it's neighbor sacral vertebrae 1 (S1) thus causing my spinal canal to be smaller than normal. Oh and add a ruptured disk with disk jelly escaping to cause more pain. Fun times.
I now understand what back pain can do to people and why some people become addicted to pain meds. Think labor pains and multiply by 100. Luckily, I have a lot less pain and stayed away from the heavy hitting narcotics. And found out I'm allergic to Morphine. Which was the only thing that took the pain away in the beginning.
So, yes. I am back on the sidelines. The sun is higher in the sky, the weather is getting warmer and shutter is rocking.
I am in my new happy place.
